In the spirit of old postcards from the Simplon train line, the sustainable renovation of the historical Baths of Géronde complex proposes a strengthening of the connection to the lake. The original semicircular changing-room building was extended both at the entrance and on the site’s northeastern slope as a promenade along the hillside, creating a scenic addition to the existing walking trail around the lake. The terraced levels formed by these new buildings allow for the harmonious integration of the spatial program.
A smooth transition to the lake was developed with new boardwalks, floating docks, and a renewed shoreline, landscaped with native plant species. Lake water is warmed by a heat pump to generate swimming water. The new stainless steel pools float just above the level of the lake, providing unobstructed views of the mountainous landscape and an idyllic setting for the bathing experience.
The careful restoration of this modernist facility enhances its impact. The material palette, limited to concrete, aluminum and wood, serves as a contemporary counterpart to the historical features. The pioneering spirit of modernist sport architecture informs this sustainable extension and returns the picturesque location of Géronde to the foreground.
